What Volunteers Provide

• Companionship for patients. Volunteers spend time with patients: talking, listening, reading aloud, watching a favorite program together, or simply sitting in comfortable silence. For patients who live alone or whose family members live at a distance, a volunteer visit can be one of the most anticipated parts of the week.
• Respite for family caregivers. Family caregivers rarely get a break – and the physical and emotional toll of constant caregiving is real. When a volunteer is present with your loved one, you are free to rest, run errands, attend to your own needs, or simply step outside.
• Practical assistance. Volunteers can assist with light, non-clinical tasks – running errands, picking up prescriptions, helping with light household tasks, or providing a meal. These small acts of practical support lift real weight from families who are already stretched thin.
• Legacy and life projects. Some volunteers assist patients with meaningful personal projects – recording life stories, organizing photographs, writing letters to loved ones, or completing something that matters to them before the end of life.
• A consistent, familiar presence. Volunteers are matched thoughtfully with patients and families – taking into account personality, interests, and needs. Over time, volunteer relationships often become genuinely meaningful to both the patient and the volunteer.

The Value Volunteers Bring – That No Clinical Role Can Replicate

Our nurses, CNAs, social workers, and chaplains each bring specialized clinical and professional expertise to your loved one’s care. Volunteers bring something different – and equally important.

They bring time. They are not managing medications or documenting a care plan. They are simply present, available in a way that even the most attentive clinical team cannot always be.

For patients who are isolated, lonely, or simply in need of human connection, a volunteer’s presence can be one of the most powerful forms of care they receive. And for families who have been carrying an enormous load, knowing that someone else is genuinely there – watching over their loved one with care, is its own kind of relief.

Part of a Coordinated Care Team

Volunteers are a recognized and valued part of Golden Rule Hospice’s interdisciplinary care team. Their observations and interactions are communicated to the care team when relevant – and their visits are coordinated with the schedule of your registered nurse, CNA, and social worker to ensure consistent, complementary support.

Nothing about hospice care at Golden Rule happens in a silo – and that includes the role our volunteers play.
