One of the services that is offered to patients and families is bereavement care. Bereavement care helps guide the patient, or loved one through their pre-grief (before the loss) and post-grief, (after the loss) of their loved one. Grief counseling is available to all family members of the patient. Below are five ways grief counseling can help one.

- First, Understand the grieving process. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, grief can be different for everyone. Why? Because each of us is different. There is no system or rule to grief as many people think but just know that your grief is just as unique as you are. Grief can come from anywhere and at any time. A smell, clothing, a song or memory. Just know it is real and allow it to take its place in your grief process. A grief counselor can help guide one through the emotions and the grief process.
- Second, Work Through your grief emotions. Grief is emotional and can be worked through. Mourning is that outward expression of grief. Crying, anger, anxiety, guilt, sadness and so forth. These are normal emotions one may feel at times, and they can come on at any given time, we call these grief bursts. A grief counselor can help guide one through these emotions and feelings.
- Third, Self-care. When one is grieving self-care is important. One tends to ignore self. Depression due to the loss as well as guilt and even unresolved issues can cause this onset and hinder one’s day-to-day life. The Grief Counselor can help and continue to provide counseling as well as emotional support to the individual in need. This can take place pre-death as well as post-death of your loved one.
- Fourth, Creating a safe place. Many people want to feel safe in their emotions and private thoughts. Many friends and family do not fully understand what others go through after a loss of a loved one, remember that everyone grieves differently. Grief counselors understands and can guide through those thoughts and emotions, creating a safe place and environment for the individual.
- Fifth, To guide one in their New You. Life becomes different after a loss; many people look to getting back to the old normal. However, that does not happen. Life changes and a part of you will change. Having a grief or bereavement counselor helps guide one in those changes and allows healing to take place and allowing one to create a newness in their life and back to focusing upon the things that may have been neglected or ignored.
